Main Learning Objectives
By the end of the week students will be able to:
- Name the five main seasons (many regions, especially in India and South Asia, recognize Summer, Rainy/Monsoon, Autumn, Winter, and Spring)
- Define “weather” (what is happening outside right now – sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, hot, cold, etc.)
- Define “season” (a long period of similar weather that lasts for many weeks or months)
- Match typical weather, clothes, activities, plants, and animals to each season
- Observe and record daily weather
- Understand that weather can change every day but seasons change slowly
Materials Needed for the Whole Week
Picture cards/flashcards of all seasons, large class weather chart, individual weather journals, crayons, child-safe scissors, glue, old magazines, cotton balls, colored paper, tissue paper, real objects (umbrella, cap, muffler, raincoat, sunglasses), story books about seasons, songs/videos (“Four Seasons” song, “What’s the Weather?” song), leaf rubbings, templates of bare trees, suns, clouds, etc.
Detailed Day-by-Day Lesson Plan
Day 1 – Monday: Introduction to Weather and Seasons Objectives:
- Understand the difference between weather and seasons
- Begin daily weather observation
Activities:
- Morning circle: Look out of the window together and ask, “What is the weather today?” Teach the sentence “Today is sunny / cloudy rainy windy cold hot.”
- Explain simple definitions:
- Weather = what the sky and air feel like right now
- Season = a long time (many weeks) when the weather is mostly the same kind
- Read a short picture book about seasons.
- Show large picture cards of the five seasons one by one. Children call out everything they notice (clothes people wear, trees, activities, sky).
- Introduce the big Class Weather & Season Chart. Mark today’s weather together with symbols (sun, cloud, rain drops, umbrella, etc.).
Closing: Quick thumbs up/thumbs down questions and children draw today’s weather on a small paper.
Day 2 – Tuesday: Summer and Rainy (Monsoon) Season Objectives:
- Describe features of summer and rainy season
- Use correct vocabulary (hot, sunny, ice-cream, swimsuit, raincoat, umbrella, puddles, thunder)
Activities:
- Morning weather observation and marking on class chart.
- Summer discussion with pictures: very hot, bright sun, children eating ice-cream, wearing cotton clothes, caps, sunglasses, going to beach or playing in park.
- Rainy season discussion: dark clouds, heavy rain, puddles, frogs, wearing raincoats and gumboots, carrying umbrellas, staying indoors or jumping in puddles.
- Craft time:
- Yellow hand-print suns for summer
- Paper umbrella and raindrop collage for rainy season
Closing: Children hold their craft and say one sentence: “In summer it is _____.” or “In rainy season we use _____.”
Day 3 – Wednesday: Autumn and Winter Objectives:
- Identify signs of autumn and winter
- Learn new words (cool, falling leaves, harvest, chilly, cold, woolen clothes, sweater, jacket, muffler, quilt)
Activities:
- Morning weather check.
- Autumn: leaves turning yellow/red/brown and falling, cooler weather, festivals, harvest time, light jackets.
- Winter: very cold, bare trees, fog or frost some mornings, we wear sweaters, caps, mufflers, socks, drink hot soup or milk.
- Crafts:
- Leaf rubbing art (place real or paper leaf under paper and rub with crayon) for autumn
- Cotton-ball snowman or sticky cotton on bare tree branches for winter feeling
Closing: Each child shows craft and says one thing about autumn or winter.
Day 4 – Thursday: Spring Season and Comparing All Seasons Objectives:
- Recognize spring as the season of new flowers and pleasant weather
- Compare all five seasons
Activities:
- Morning weather observation.
- Spring: flowers blooming (marigold, rose, jasmine), butterflies, new green leaves, birds making nests, pleasant (not too hot, not too cold) weather, we wear light full-sleeve clothes.
- Craft: Tissue-paper or fingerprint flowers to make a spring garden picture.
- Whole-class sorting game: Teacher shows pictures (ice-cream, raincoat, sweater, kite, flowers, umbrella, woolen cap, mango, etc.). Children run and put each picture in the correct season pocket/envelope on the board.
Closing: Exit ticket – Children complete the sentence on a strip: “My favourite season is ______ because ______.”
Day 5 – Friday: Review and Weather Journal Start Objectives:
- Revise all five seasons confidently
- Begin personal weather recording
Activities:
- Final morning weather observation for the week and complete the class chart.
- “Seasons Fashion Show”: Each child brings or wears one item from home (cap for summer, tiny umbrella or raincoat for monsoon, muffler for winter, flower clip for spring, etc.) and walks like a model saying, “I am ready for ______ season because I have ______.”
- Sing the “Five Seasons” song together.
- Distribute personal “My Weather Journal” (small booklet). Decorate the cover and draw today’s weather on the first page. Explain they will draw the weather every day for the next few weeks.
- Closing circle: Teacher asks, “Does the weather stay the same every day?” (No!) “Do seasons change every day?” (No, they change slowly after many weeks).
Closing chant together: “Summer, Rainy, Autumn, Winter, Spring – Five beautiful seasons every year they bring!”
Homework / Family Activity (optional)
Send a “Seasons at Home” sheet: Draw or paste pictures of:
- One food you love in summer One thing you use in rainy season One warm clothing for winter One flower you see in spring
Differentiation & Support
- For children who need extra help → give ready-cut shapes and real objects to touch and feel.
- For advanced children → let them be the daily “Weather Reporter” who stands in front and tells the class the weather using full sentences.
This week-long plan is full of stories, songs, crafts, movement, and repetition so every Grade 1 child ends the week happy and confident about seasons and weather!
